This experience is definitely preparing me for the future. Being able to observe the students and the teachers was an experience in itself. I like the interaction with the teachers and the students. The teacher and the teachers aid take turns teaching group A and group B. (as I mentioned before my class in divided into two groups. A: very low reading level, B: is 1st grade reading level) The students yell out who they want them to teach them. The teachers then mutually decide who they will teach. It's a nice thing to see. It makes the students happy, as well as the teachers.
I think I have very little patience. I have also learned that if I truly want to be a teacher, I MUST learn to be patient. Although, for the most part my students are good, but there are a couple who distract the class and can make it difficult sometimes to teach. The teachers yell at them sometimes or put them in the back of the class, until eventually they behave. As I observe, I put my self in the teachers feet. What would I do? What would say? There are different ways to approach a student and I will learn how to deal with difficult situations as I continue to go to my class. I am very happy with the school that was chosen for me. I am very happy with my students and teachers that I get to see every Wednesday, this has been a great experience for me.

It must feel great when students say things like that. I tutor Spanish privately, and I remember that last year, my twelve year old student made me an origami bird for Christmas; that was a great little unexpected reward. I believe that little by little we all are going to learn how to handle difficult class situations.
ReplyDeleteThat's great! it is good to know a little bit from other countries too. I really like the idea of your student about bringing money, she was interested in learning more on that subject.
ReplyDeleteMaria, I am glad that this experience shaped your identity. You are probably correct about how experience is so important for us to become the best educator we can be. I find it interesting that you were not sure how to react to the student saying "I love you," and it is understandable that you were not sure how to react. Now that you have experienced it, you can think on it and be more prepared next time if it happens again. It is important to both encourage students to express feelings and emotions AND show then boundaries!
ReplyDeletehahaha, isn't it just wonderful when students put you in these weird situations just out of nowhere? I've hit that a few times in my class and I have tried to ignore it. It seems to consist of not all of them having the same ideas of personal space that I was brought up with (then again, my parents have a book that explained it, see, my whole family is weird!).
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that they are connecting with you though, I think that's one of the single best things about working with students is that connection they can have with you.
My students also try and talk to me a lot in Spanish, I just can't understand that much of it yet!
OH, AND YOU LEFT THE CLASS ON WEDNESDAY EARLY! I had to walk part way across the campus on my own! I hope you're happy now Ms V! =D
It was nice to read you had a good experience with yoour students. I wish you the best of luck in the future and maybe we will have a class together again!!
